Broughton Lubricants

Broughton Lubricants was a family owned oil and lubricants distribution business based in Lancashire specialising in the supply of Castrol and BP products. The company was acquired by Ribble Fuels in 2006 and bd2 was subsequently commissioned to redesign and rebuild their e-commerce site. E-commerce has transformed their business and they now sell their specialist products all over the world and in far greater volumes.

e-commerce in the UK

With over 19 million households in the UK connected to the internet and over 60% of us purchasing online, e-commerce has undoubtedly come of age. And with the UK internet economy valued at £100 Billion - higher than either transport or construction - and predictions that it will account for 10% of GDP by 2015, the exponential growth of e-commerce is set to continue.

There's no doubt that e-commerce has transformed the UK's economy. In fact, we have become the largest per capita e-commerce market and the second largest online advertising market in the world. Perhaps surprisingly, we spend more online than the US does.

And the significance of the internet is even greater as a further £40 Billion is spent on products which have been researched online. Business to business transactions value around £360 Billion but again, that doesn't include productivity improvements. The internet has proven particularly beneficial for SMEs with those active online becoming more successful, growing more quickly and reaching wider markets than their competitors. The UK is also a net exporter of e-commerce goods and services, exporting £2.80 for every £1 in imports - a ratio that's virtually the exact opposite of the rest of the economy.

The Broughton Lubricants case study shown opposite, is a classic example of a small company that has embraced e-commerce with dramatic results. The business provides specialist industrial lubricants and before going online this was focused on the North West, more specifically, in a 20 mile radius of their depot in Clitheroe. Since going online it has received orders from all over the world, including one for over £200,000 from the Middle East. They estimate that they're now taking an order every 15 minutes through the website - that's both direct orders but many over the phone in conjunction with the site which is used for information gathering.

Most design agencies offer at least a website design service. Some will also construct the site but many sub-contract this work particularly when it comes to large or complex projects.
